Mom Fashion

August 31, 2016 By Erin 2 Comments

I have spent a lot of time recently trying to figure out what my style is. I know what my style used to be, but now that I am a mom there are a few different dynamics to think about. What exactly is mom fashion? I want to be a little conservative. I mean, I don’t need everything hanging out at preschool pickup. I want to be stylish. I want to be comfortable, but not in yoga pants everyday. Finding a way to balance it all and have my own unique style has been interesting. Becoming a mom, I went through a period of figuring out this new me. I am more confident than I ever have been before. I love my new body more than I ever have before and I am more active than I ever have been before.

I am a farm girl at heart and living a big city life. I add a lot of floral prints to please the farm girl.  I feel the most confident in black and neutrals. I used to try to wear bright colors and expand my wardrobe. I realized that when I went into my closet I would always bypass that hot pink sweater. I learned about the KonMari method of organizing. A method of simplifying and organizing your home to find joy in what you own. I did this to my closet and I accepted that black is where I am comfortable. I add colors to my outfit by accessories when I feel inspired to.

Here are some of my favorite, easy to wear looks

Date Night Out-

Whether it is with your spouse or with your girls, I feel like any night out is all about fun. Getting out to sit and talk can be one of the best things mentally for a momma. Also feeling pretty can help too. I try to always wear my hair down, since half of the time it is in a top knot at home. I usually stick to my favorite black jeans and black blouse. Ian loves seeing a little leg so sometimes I pair it with a simple black mini. I added a pop of color in the shoes for a little fun!

Afternoons-

Our afternoons can lead us anywhere. If I truly have no plans to work out I try to avoid the yoga pants look and find a pretty floral maxi to spend my days in. To be honest, since having kids, wearing jeans all day are really uncomfortable. I like to have something on that stretches and moves nicely with my body. I wear maxi dresses with sandals from short walks down the street to picking up the kids from school. It just takes a minute to throw on in the morning. One single piece of clothing. In the winter and fall I pair them with flat boots or ballet flats depending on the weather.

Classic White Shoes with afternoon neutrals–

Another question I get asked a lot by moms trying to avoid the “I wear yoga pants but dont work out” look is what shoes to wear so you can chase your speedy toddlers around. This is one of my favorite mom fashion pieces. I love wearing the classic white Adidas superstars. You can really wear them with anything, from your black jeans at night to Disneyland on vacation. They look good and are really easy to keep white, which can sometimes be tricky with kids always standing on your feet.

Family Dinner Night-

For evenings out with the children, I want to be dressed up but still comfortable. Stilettos don’t work for carrying and chasing kids through a restaurant so I go for a classic boot and a comfortable floral dress.

Understanding who you are and what you like is so important in identifying your personal style. Although I have nothing against the daily yoga pants, sometimes having a wardrobe you love and feel confident in can make you feel even better. I suggest sitting in your closet and pulling some of your favorite pieces or even starting your own Pinterest board of how you want your style to look. Clear out what you don’t need and what doesn’t make you happy and find joy in your own personal look.

Good Luck
