In Case you Missed it – A summary of what I discussed on KTLA/Top Family Travel Safety Tips!

Traveling as a family can be stressful. Finding ways for everyone to be comfortable and happy is always a top priority. Do you ever think about being prepared for an emergency though? Our family loves big adventures and I am sure to always prepare for any worst case scenario. Travel Safety is always at the top of my list when planning a trip. On KTLA I shared my top tips for family Travel Safety wherever you may go.
- Emergency medical transport membership for the whole family – From Medjet- First of all, I always recommend looking into travel insurance before a trip. That said, most travelers don’t realize that medical transport home in the case of an emergency isn’t included in most travel insurance policies, including the ones that come with platinum credit cards, so you could end up stranded in a foreign hospital or face a massive bill to get evacuated home. I personally purchase an annual protection supplement called Medjet which ensures that my family can be transported to our “hospital of choice” – no questions asked. It’s perfect for families,Medjet’s family membership covers up to 2 adults and 5 dependents and guarantees coverage of all members no matter whether they’re traveling together or apart, as long as they’re 150 miles from home. As a nurse, I know first-hand how important it is to get home to your family and doctor in an emergency. The membership gives me that “peace of mind” that’s so important for a traveling mom!
- GPS/tracker for kids (i.e. Tile keychain)- We have all had that moment where our kid disappears for a second. Now with the security of trackers, we can have their exact location at our fingertips with smart phones.
- Monkey tail backpack leash – Keeps kids safe and close, especially in busy countries with lots of traffic – parents can ease their mind knowing their children are safely attached!
- Name stickers with phone # on everything– If your child or any of their belongings get lost, they can easily be returned with personalized name stickers from Mabels Labels.
- Personalized tattoos (with phone number and/or hotel address) – these tattoos stick right on the skin so your child will always have your contact information if they get lost, even if they lose their personal belongings. In general, it’s important to have your hotel’s name written out somewhere (even carrying around a business card from the hotel yourself can help), especially when you’re traveling in a country where English isn’t the first language. If you or your child is lost and trying to find the hotel, you don’t have to deal with awkward language barriers if you’re pronouncing the hotel’s name incorrectly, you can simply show a local the hotel’s name or business card!
- First aid kit designed for specific country – from basic Band Aids to specific treatments for that destination (will you be snorkeling? Hiking where there are mosquitos, poison ivy or ticks? Traveling somewhere that’s known for stomach bugs? Etc.), research where you will be going and plan accordingly for any injuries your family may face. (Ex: In Thailand Penna got stung by a Box Jellyfish and Mia sliced her foot on Coral while snorkeling. We had everything we need to treat them in a moment’s notice!)
- Travel-size First Aid book for families – If you’re not up to speed on basic First Aid, this can help you treat your family before seeking medical attention.
- App to teach your kid language/translate – Our kids learned basic language and phrases so they were able to communicate with locals around the country. For example, we used “Learn Thai” and Duolingo for our trip to Thailand. From “hello” to “thank You”, to “bathroom,” certain phrases are important to have your children communicate (especially if they were to get lost)!
- Medical jewelry if applies to kid – children with special medical concerns should always wear a medical bracelet, especially if you’re traveling. For children with sensitive medical concerns, it might be worthwhile to translate their medical bracelet into the local language and create a sticker for one side of the medical bracelet.
